CUSTOM STAINLESS STEEL BOLLARD COVERS

Most stainless steel bollards are actually stainless steel covers that go over regular steel bollards. The strength of a bollard is mainly a function of its mass: diameter, wall thickness and how deep the bollard is buried. So in nearly all cases, bollards are made of regular (or galvanized) steel, with stainless steel covers. These are short samples of the 3 types of covers we carry. These show 8" nominal diameter in flat, dome and slant top, #4 brushed finish, which attach by 4 set screws near the bottom. We normally have the quote back within 1 - 2 business days.

Sizes and types of stainless steel bollard covers

Size: 4" to 18" in diameter of any height
Wall thickness is normally Schedule 10
Top: Dome, Flat, Slant
Stainless type: either 304 or 316. 316 is maritime grade and resists salt and sea water. 316 is more expensive.
Surface: Typically #4 brushed
Attach by: 4 set screws standard
Optional: spacer ring inside cover for stabilization

Often, bollards and bollard covers are one of the last products purchased and installed for a project. We recommend that you consider purchasing them sooner, given the ever-changing industries of steel and freight. Lead time from order until delivery is stated on our quotes and invoice as an estimate. We are working hard with the production and freight pieces of each order particularly since we have seen a rise in material and delivery times. We strive to fabricate and send your product to you in a timely fashion, and will keep you current on any changes with delivery. Considerations when ordering stainless steel bollard covers

304 or 316 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is made in two types: 304 and 316. If you live near saltwater or where salt is used in the winter, we strongly recommend 316 stainless steel. It is made with molybdenum, which changes it to Marine Grade Stainless. It resists corrosion much better than 304. If you are installing your bollard underground, which is the case with most removable bollards and buried bollards, we strongly recommend considering type 316. The elements and moisture underground can often lead to quicker corrosion.

If no salt present and you are using a plate bollard or bollard cover, you may use 304. It is less expensive.

PLEASE NOTE: EVEN TYPE 316 WILL RUST IF SALT IS PRESENT

We recommend applying this product on installation and periodically when rust appears. Brush on; wait 15 minutes; hose off. 1 gallon cleans 250sf, or about 40 8" x 36" bollards.

Sizing

Most bollards being covered are made of steel pipe in nominal ANSI sizes of 4", 6", 8" or 10" which we cover with the next even size up. So a 4" is covered by a 6" for example.

This picture shows the sizes of 6", 8", 10" and 12" we normally use. If you need something different, we can make them in other sizes.

Stainless Steel Bollard Cover Standard Sizes 6" to 12"

Brushed or Mirror Finish

The finish on stainless steel bollards is almost always a #4 brush finish. After the bollard cover is made, it is polished. A brush finish can be made fairly quickly, while a mirrored finish takes much longer. Consequently, it costs much more. Brushed also looks better longer. We recommend the #4 brush finish as shown here.

Flat, Dome or Slanted Top

There are three top styles offered. Flat top bollards invite sitting, birds (and their gifts), and empty bottles. We recommend either a dome or 30°or 45° slant top instead, as they discourage other uses.

Installation

To install, you slide the bollard cover over your steel bollard. Our covers are attached to the bollard by 4 set screws at the bottom. The set screws are about 1" long if you cover a regular steel pipe with the next even size up. We offer an optional spacer ring that is welded to the inside of the cover near the top to help close the gap between the underlying bollard and the cover. The spacer ring provides extra stability in the event the cover is knocked after installation.
